Muscle Activation Techniques

Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT™)

MAT™ is a very specific, non-medical process with a narrow application to the assessment, improvement and maintenance of a targeted aspect of human motor control: muscle contractile efficiency!  MAT™ was developed by Greg Roskopf, a biomechanics consultant to the Denver Broncos, Denver Nuggets, and Utah Jazz.  MAT™ can ensure that your muscular system is performing optimally.

The goals of MAT™:

 * Determine whether or not the brain is properly communicating to you muscles to contract when needed.

 * Identify which muscles are not receiving neural input by performing range of motion tests.

 * Improve stability of your joints by reactivating muscles and their ability to contract on demand.

 * It is a patrolling tool to look for potential problems in the muscular system.  You don't want to wait until  there is a problem; look for vulnerabilities.

The fundamental principle of the MAT™ process is that muscle tightness is secondary to muscle weakness.  This involves a paradigm shift in how most people view tightness.  MAT™ focuses on the underlying cause of the symptoms.  The central nervous system detects various forms of stresses, and as a defense mechanism will inhibit the ability of the muscles to fully contract.  Muscular inhibitions mean less support for the joints, which can lead to compensation patterns.  When you get the muscles back to contracting on demand, the body will experience more strength, stability, range of motion, and reduced muscle and joint pain.

Some indicators of muscle inhibition:

 * Asymmetrical range of motion

 * Muscle weakness

 * Muscle tightness or movement restrictions

 * Muscle cramping

 * Movements that are painful

 * Reduced instability of a joint

MAT™ trains the muscles and the brain to work as a connected system.  Think about it you were trying to start your car that had a loose battery cable connections.  When you turn on the ignition, the car will have trouble starting, as it is not getting the proper communication.  MAT™ aims to restore the electrical pathways between the muscle and the brain.  By improving the feedback loop between the muscle and the brain, via the nervous system, the chance of injury will be reduced.  Your muscles have a unique role in protecting the body against physical stresses that can cause injury and tissue damage, which leads to pain.  If a muscle system fails to do its job properly, then tissues in the body will get stressed, damaged, and inflamed.  You have to keep the muscular system working at a high level in order to maintain an active life for the years to come!

Is MAT™ for you?

 * Do you want to increase your muscular ability and joint integrity?

 * Do you have joint tightness, pain or restricted range of motion?

 * Are you active and want to remain active?

 * Do you want to find and correct your muscle imbalances?

 * Do you want to improve your sports performance?

 * You aren't looking for a quick fix.  MAT™ is a process.
